Although the story presented in this play is fiction almost all of the characters are based on real people who played a part in the life of Kristina of
Sweden and most of the events represent historical fact. For example, Oxenstierna acted as her mentor and Chancellor until she came of age and was a pupil of Descartes, who eventually died in the cold in Sweden.
Kristina was undoubtedly a complex character. At her fathers insistence she was brought up as a boy. Well educated, she studied 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. She loved horse riding and bear hunting and spoke 5 languages. She took an active political role for the age of 13 and was instrumental in ending the 30 years war. Later, in Rome, she became a great patron of the arts, studied theology and created an academy of philosophy and literature.
Her name was associated with several men, although it is thought she may have remained a virgin. She undoubtedly fell deeply in love with Cardinal Azzolino and they remained good friends until hear death in 1689. He died just a month later. Due to her devotion to the Catholic Church she became one of only 3 laywomen to have been interred in St. Peter's Basilica.
This version of Kristina's life, by Ruth Wolf, was premiered at The Theatre Royal, Bath in 1971, staring Gemma Jones. It was made into a film in 1979 with Liv Ulman and Peter Finch, and her story was told in a 1933 film string Greta Garbo
